Do Not Massage This Man!!!

Details:

Practitioners Beware!!!

July 2011 roaming the Waikato, read below

He phoned a clinic in Lyttleton in June 2011 under the name Barry McLeod to book a full back & thigh wax. He had been into our premises and been abusive in August 2010.

After a brief stint in Tauranga Gareth McWilliams reared his ugly head in Christchurch again (Oct 2009).

An article had been written about him and was published in one of the issues of 'Hands On'. Read practitioner accounts below.

Also known as:

  • Gerard Evans
  • Evan Thompson
  • Edward McWilliams
  • David Gareth Williams
  • David Williams
  • Barry McLeod
  • Pinn
  • David Thompson

Most of the names are not very imaginative and sometimes he doesn't know them himself.

He has a history of booking massages (often under an assumed name) and not paying for them. Also booking massages and not turning up for them. I am also aware of a case of him behaving inappropriately toward a female. He has used different names in the past, presently has no contact phone number.

He sometimes claims that ACC will pay for it and has a record of not showing up for second appointments (if he shows for the first at all!).

He seems to seek out females rather than males, preferably some who work by themselves. The police has been alerted in a couple of cases where he made a booking, he did not turn up in the end.

Raglan July 2011

2 weeks ago, I went to my clinic in downtown Raglan and he was hanging around outside, he booked in and asked what kind of massage I did and said he walked a lot and did a lot of horse riding, he really wanted to know whether I massage deep into the buttocks, I said I massaged the top of glute max and med, and he would be draped to his buttock crease and above that would be the area I massaged, he seemed to be a bit stuck on the fact that i wouldn't massaged lower. He also indicated he got sore hammys and adductors and would need them massaged.

I asked for a contact ph number and address which he didn't have as he had just moved up from CHCH. He said he would show up for the appointment later in the week.

Earlier that day he had spent some time in the retail shop beside my clinic, I spoke briefly with the shop assistant about him, to get his thoughts of him, she thought he was genuine, a bit lonely and had some Health Problems with which massage would. She did warn me to get the money as he seemed a bit short and she said to get the money before the massage.

Gareth showed up for his appointment later in the week, I saw him walk out of our local hotel, before he came for the massage, he smelt like cigarettes and alcohol. I was able to in our discussion for the massage ask how he was paying, this is when the WINZ letter came up, I said I wasn't aware that WINZ paid for massage and it was my policy to be paid at the time of the massage, he got angry, spat, swore and went on and on about how I'd be paid 2 weeks later after WINZ got the letter.

Luckily the shop assistant who I had spoken to earlier in the week heard the raised voice and interrupted the situation, gareth calmed down, asked to rebook the following Monday as he had some money coming in from bonus bonds over the weekend. Later that night i saw him really intoxicated at the local hotel, but didn't have any encounter with him there.

On the Monday he did a no show for his appointment. That day I rang local therapists to warn them about him. A couple had already had calls from him and got the feeling that they wouldn't want to massage him anyway. Gareth left a couple of messages on my phone apologizing for the no show, I didn't talk to him.

On the Tuesday our local police constable rung and said that she was warning therapists, pilates instructors, yoga teachers, beauty therapists and health clinics, doctors, physios about Gareth. He had been in the medical centre a lot over the week and they had asked the police to check him out.

The police said he had a history of not paying for massage, or other health related appointments and had been known to fake an epileptic fit during the massage and then grope the therapist. They had been around to visit him and warned him that they knew what he did and they were keeping an eye on him.

Gareth rung the next day and I spoke to him and I said I wasn't happy to massage him based on the way he acted the week before and that I knew WINZ didn't cover costs for massage.

I found out later that week he has been ringing clinics in Hamilton to get quotes for WINZ. I have tried to spread the word as much as I can about Gareth. I can't believe that he is still trying this on after reading all these stories and the police involvement. I hope that therapists play it safe, make sure there's people around if you do get people like this and encourage everyone to let other therapists and body workers know about him whenever you can

Christchurch June 2011

We had a horrid time last August with him. Today he phoned and I instantly recognized his voice and rhetoric. He asked for back and thigh wax from our beautician.

He gave the name Barry McLeod and when asked for a phone number gave 022 032 0688. I have yet to try to phone back but will do after the weekend to see what name he gives then, or ifs the number is active.

I had previously told him he could not attend our clinic as we had all female staff and Pegasus had issued a warning! Truly I never thought he would try again!

Motueka March 2011

In March I had an unfortunate and very educational experience with the infamous Gareth Williams. I'm sending some details that i thought might be good to send out.

After the February quake, Gareth Williams left chch and ended up here in Golden Bay. He hit quite a few practitioners in Motueka and a couple of us in Takaka. Unfortunately it's not always easy to put two and two together! I treated him in my clinic, his behaviour wasn't bad but he did have a creepy vibe and therefore was not given his requested adductor massage.

His story this time was that he had epilepsy. He refused to pay at the end of the session and proceeded to try to pressure me into writing a letter to winz as they would pay for it. To cut a long story short, i had him charged with obtaining by deception. The police were very helpful and of course already knew of him. He has repeatedly phoned me since then for no good reason and also questioned a fellow practitioner in Motueka via txt on weather she did 'hand relief'.

The outcome of his court visit in nelson is that he paid and therefore has not been charged. Should he repeat offend in the next 12 months however he will be charged for the recent offences as well.  This man has already served time for this and about a year ago was on a final warning again.

After I had him charged and he was on police bale conditions to not seek any more massage; he did exactly that a few days later. He can't help himself, it is a compulsion.

Please everyone keep your eyes open for him and don't book him in. However if you happen to get caught out, make sure you follow it up because it could finally lead to some resolution of this issue of his repeat offending.

Christchurch July 2010

Have just had this man in the clinic. Didn't massage him and rang the police. Have just seen the beauty therapist next door also, who says he's booked in for a wax, so is now targeting them too!!

Can you please send out more warning that this guy is around? His story this time was that he is disabled, has Downs Syndrome and is in the special olympics and that his support worker was supposed to be there and to pay. He wanted to make sure the pressure in his shoulders would be really deep and that i could massage his adductors (!) and feet.

I got suspicious once he explained that he got paid every 2 weeks and that we should invoice him. Also, since he is clearly overweight and not Downs Syndrome. He looks more like the hunchback of Notre Dame than Shrek, I reckon. Has one eye slightly bigger than the other. DOB 11-12-68.

Christchurch June 2010

Hi Edi,

Well he's back!

Gareth McWilliams booked an hour and a half appointment with one of our therapists two weeks ago.  After she had spoken with him on the phone, she mentioned to me she had had a very bizzare conversation with a man and intuitively felt it wasn't right.  Straight away I thought of Gareth and told her the story.

I answered a call from the same man a day later wanting to reschedule for the following day, and was 100% sure it was Gareth, so I rebooked his appointment but told my therapist to book other clients in as Gareth will either not show or when asked for payment prior to his massage he will not pay....he didn't show.

Years ago I had Gareth in for an hour and a half massage, and at the end of the session he produced a Work and Income form filled out with his details etc and said that I needed to ring them to organise payment.  He booked an appointment for the following week and left.

I rang Work and Income but of course find they don't do payments that way, so I rang the number Gareth had given me to talk with him and it was a false number. He actually turned up for the next appointment and when told that he wasn't getting his massage unless he paid for last weeks and this one up front he got distressed and I asked him to leave which he did.

I have just spoken with the police about Gareth and they have asked me to come in to lay and formal complaint as they can look at it under fraud.  Anyone who has had a similar experience with Gareth McWilliams and hasn't emailed there story to Edi, please do! The more we have on this guy the better! It is time for it to end.

Christchurch October 2009

Hi Edi

Was talking to Maria who receives your newsletter and she recommended I tell you that I'd had a client called David one week and Gareth the next!!
Now that I've had time to think about it, Karolina had sent me a warning about him a few years ago.

Anyway not a very pleasant experience. He asked for 1 1/2 hrs very deep tissue, my hackles were up the whole time. Had no money said he'd bring it next week as on a benefit.

Rang last Thursday to bring the money - calling himself Garath this time. Arrived gave me $25 wanting to pay rest later then to book another massage. Got a bit aggressive when I said this wasn't suitable. I rang the contact nb he' given me and got disconnected dial tone.

Rang the person whose name he gave me that recommened me.

She didn't know him just gave my nb out.  Anyway he is rather creepy and both my daughter and were upset by him. Maria says you've issued warnings about him. So thought I'd let you know - hope he doesn't ring again but have feeling he'll move on to the next therapist.

Christchurch October 2009

Hi Edi

Just a warning to all that I had a booking made this morning from a Gareth Evans for a massage tomorrow morning.

Alarm bells rang at this name so I refered to the massage therapists site - and sure enough he has a new combination of his aka's. Of course he gave the receptionist a bogus phone number. I have contacted the police who warned me that he is a nasty individual - towards women, obviously they couldn't say too much.

Thanks to your website and the accounts that other therapists have sent in, it was helpful with identification when talking to the police - as I didn't actually see or talk to him. I am working at the Recreation Centre (Gym) at Canterbury University. Please publish my email, I just spoke to the police again as I couldn't get hold of this guy to cancel the appointment, to find out the best approach if he does show up.

They told me that he must have only recently come back to Christchurch - all current information they have on him is from Tauranga. I wanted to cancel the appointment and be honest and tell him that we are on to him and I will not have him as a client so he would get the idea that he is well known to us therapists but the police advised me to just say that we are fully booked or something - and not provoke him. Interesting.

So again Edi - thanks for the website. This is a good reminder to all to trust your instincts, as the receptionist only rang me because even though he didn't say anything wrong he didn't sound right.

Christchurch, 12-03-06

Booked for a massage with a therapist in CHCH, did not give his phone number although prompted twice.

Luckily the therapist recognised his voice from three weeks earlier where he had a session he did not pay for.

The name David Thompson was in the Press that same morning, although it is really only a variation of the themes above. Should have taken the name of the flying pig the day before (remember the tornado?) Pretended to participate in the Olympics, probably meant the Commmonwealth Games coming up in Aussie.

Never showed up in the end anyway.

Christchurch, 22-02-06

We had a David Williams come into work twice about a month ago. He filled out new patient forms and made a booking then rang 2 days before it to say WINZ would be paying for his massage, firstly though I had to provide a written report of what treatment he received from me, then the WINZ payment would follow.

Yeah Right! The girls told him we didn't do it that way and that he would have to pay us and get WINZ to pay him back, and that was the last we heard from him.

When I heard the story I checked his phone numbers and sure enough they didn't exist! I never dealt with him the reception girls did. Their description was he looked like quasimodo (?) with one eye going off to the side.

Christchurch, 21-02-06

Dear Edi,

just to let you know on Sunday a man who called himself Gerard Evans rang to confirm his appointment with us for 3pm today but the name we had in our books was called Evan Thompson for the same time, and would not give us any contact phone number, he didn't seem 100% about what his name was and gave a couple of suggestions as to what the name could be, sounds like a phoney to me, could you please send through the article you wrote about him last year so that we can prevent him from making further bookings at the spa. He is now using the name Edward McWilliams. It would be great if you could pass this info on to everyone.

Christchurch

He presented with a false name but when asked to fill in the form he used his real name, lack of consistency and planning by the looks of it.

Christchurch

Just wanted you to know that Gareth Williams (or Pinn as he's going by now) tried to book an appointment with me yesterday, he has tried at the physio down the hall eariler.

Luckily our other massage therapist had just brought in an email about him, so we weren't to surprised.

He's horrible!!!!!! Funnily enough we were full!

Anyway, maybe an email out to everyone on your list wouldn't go amiss.

Ashburton

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Gareth Williams (aka David Gareth Williams...Gareth McWilliams).

Luckily alarm bells rang and I thought his story sounded familiar (he wanted a massage but that he was a mild epileptic and should he grab me while he was on the table, this was quite normal!!

I remember a conversation with two other therapists which sounded a lot like this). He said he had sore shoulders and neck from doing a lot of horseriding with the Riding for the Disabled, in fact his story sounded quite plausible.

A man fitting the same description was spoken to by Police in Fairlie recently for inappropriate behaviour towards a doctor and also earlier this week in Timaru.

I don't know if you have seen him, but the description of him is "a smaller version of Shrek". Quite fitting really.

Anyway, all the medical centres and physios and massage therapists here in Ashburton and Methven have been phoned and advised that he is in town, but just thought I would email you and let you know...in case you want to add it onto any of your newsletters.
